PhD Diana Simpson awarded a Wilkinson Medal for Postgraduate Student of the Year in the Faculty of Humanities


Faculty of Humanities at University of Manchester, awarded a Wilkinson Medal for Postgraduate Student of the Year to Diana, a PhD student in Electro-acoustic composition working at NOVARS.
Diana has achieved the highest levels of international distinction with her PhD compositional work and research (in the form of prizes, performances and residencies), and contributed hugely to broader activities in Music and the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures, (SAHC). Diana is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and a Dewar Arts Award.

Prizes
1. Anima Machina, First Prize 2007 SCRIME International Competition for Electroacoustic Composition. France.
2. Cipher, Honorable Mention 2007 Concurso Internacional de Música Eletroacústica de São Paulo. Brazil.
3. 2nd Prize: Espace du Son competition for the interpretation and diffusion of electroacoustic music. 2008, Brussels. Belgium.

Residencies
1. 2008 Orford Summer School. Montreal, Canada.
2. 2007 Atlantic Centre for the Arts Summer School. Florida, USA.
3. 2007 EMS (Electronic Music Studios) Stockholm, Sweden.

Interdisciplinary collaboration in SAHC
She has collaborated with students in Drama in the production sound and music for theatre works
1. The Yellow Wallpaper (2008) Electroacoustic score for a theatre production of The Yellow Wallpaper. Directed by Rob Drummer and performed at the Manchester Museum, 27th-29th May 2008.
2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Performances 3rd, 4th, and 5th of December at Club Underground, UMIST Students' Union, Sackville Street, Manchester 7pm. Directed by Timothy Jones.

Teaching/leadership
1. She is the primary Student-Director of the MANTIS post-graduate Festival 7 - 8 March 2009
2. She also acted as assistant Director of the MANTIS Festival 31 Oct - 2 Nov 2008
3. Graduate Teaching Assistant for the University of Manchester
4. Freelance workshop leader for the Sonic Postcards project run by Sonic Arts Network (UK)
