Andrew Garbett

Andrew is a highly versatile composer whose experience ranges from composing solo, chamber, choral, orchestral and electroacoustic music for the concert hall, to writing music for dance, film, and youth ensembles. Andrew studied with Adam Gorb, Paul Patterson and Anthony Gilbert at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester, UK). He is currently studying PhD at the NOVARS research centre under the supervision of Dr Ricardo Climent and Dr David Berezan

Research Interests

His music ranges from highly experimental avant-garde works through to very accessible music in a wide range of genres.

Darragh Morgan records 'Koorean Air' in Studio ONE @ NOVARS

Darragh Morgan spent a day in Manchester to record Ricardo Climent's piece for violin and electronics entitled

The recording took place at NOVARS Research Centre, University of Manchester.

Irish violinist Darragh Morgan has a hugely diverse career. Concerto highlights include working closely with Arvo Part, performing his Tabula Rasa in the closing concert of the RTE Living Music Festival, followed by over 20 performances with London Musici/Rambert Dance Company. Numerous solo appearances with the Ulster Orchestra include the world premiere of Sir John Tavener's Hymn of Dawn which he also performed with the Istanbul Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded Donnacha Dennehy's Elastic Harmonic with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and premiered Andrew Poppy's Darwin's Sin Draw with the Crash Ensemble. Darragh gave the South African premiere of Samuel Barber's violin concerto with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and other concerto appearances include Koln Kammer Orchester and Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.

NOVARS collaborator, composer and telecommunication engineer Enrique Tomas of NoTOURS (Linz/Madrid), presented to NOVARS team some of the new software updates made for the Notours application (Android), used during last MANTIS Festival and with support by cities@manchester.

Back in June 2011, a storm of ideas after the MANTIS Sonic Metaontology project, culminated in a number of compositional suggestions to Enrique, to make the software more versatile for the type of research on exploring cities through sound at NOVARS. Five months after, and as a result of this and other workshops, he presented some powerful changes and fixes, including an offline sonic simulator with openmaps and processing

PROGRAMME

Ensayo sobre la Torpeza (2007) live acousmatic code compiling [ca. 9']

This piece and the other ‘ensayo’ in this programme belong to my series of ‘live code essays’ or works of live 'tweaking' sound art, which can be described as 'editing-performances'. I am interested in the boundaries (and possible misinterpretations by the audience!) between computer language and natural language projected on screen, but also in the creative flow of code editing as a performance. Although these pieces are not traditional live coding (as much code is prepared beforehand), edits and new lines of code are compiled and performed live in front of the audience and projected on screen. Photography and text chunks are also presented algorithmically and related to the essays. The relative messiness of the screen shared with the audience reflects the coexistence of the many media formats and the way computer composers think musically. From a conceptual perspective, the ensayos attempt a media art take on the essays of French renaissance essayist Michel de Montaigne (1533-92). In his essays Montaigne contemplates a topic and freely moves between quotation of the classics, his everyday experiences and his own philosophical musings. His writing is fresh and varied and likely to leave the reader with more questions than answers. In this he is a role model for me. I have tried to use sounds that elicit instant visual associations and play with their meaning, juxtaposing, mixing and transforming. But I am also interested in the hyper linking spirit of Montaigne's referencing and the potential for plundered media to help enrich the poetic message.

Garabesque Machine (2010) tenor sax and live electronics [ca 6']

Although written for clarinetist Gareth Stuart, this work is not restricted to any wind instrument in particular. It explores musical patterning and the extension of the sonorities of the sax by live electronic manipulations. The piece is in an episodic form alternating lyrical melodies with rhythmic passages and wondering at how varied a sound-world can be derived from a single instrument.

The Blank Page (2011) live coding starting from a blank page [ca 7']

The title of this coding improvisation references a work that introduced me to nested n-tuplets and music programmed on the synclavier sampling instrument by the now legendary composer Frank Zappa.

eBop (2010) tenor sax and live electronics [ca. 7’]

This work was commissioned by Spanish saxophonist Iñigo Ibaibarriaga. It is entirely composed using variations and rhythmic transformations of basic melodic cells through live coding. Using the SuperCollider computer music programming language, I set about jamming with riff ideas for the tenor sax. One variation leading to another and making use of controlled randomness in the detail of the score, I nevertheless stood back and reassembled the music from the results of my code. While I was writing (typing!) it, I could not help thinking of Lejaren Hiller and Leonard Isaacson’s Illiac Suite of 1957. In their piece an ‘etude’ approach is employed to apply contrapuntal and rhythmic variation techniques to the generated pitch material. The result was then transcribed for string quartet. Their approach was well planned and although the tones were generated randomly, the composition strategies were employed quite rigidly, one could say scientifically. ‘On the fly programming’ as afforded by languages like SuperCollider, allow the composer to test and playfully interact with their computer music work as they create it. This was not possible in 1957, yet the spirit of allowing the machine to work out the details of a composition according to rules remains a common fascination across time.

Insect Medium (2011) Violin and Soundtrack [ca. 3’]

Insect Medium was written for virtuoso Japanese violinist Mifune Tsuji who gave its first performance in October 2011. In this performance the piece included a drummer (which is optional for the performance of the piece). This music takes the ‘tape and soloist’ genre of electroacoustic music and slightly recasts it into a piece which is really intended for a remixing DJ and a live performer.

Biography

Julio d’Escriván (b.1960) is a composer and creative technologist who has worked extensively in music for commercials, TV and film. d’Escriván’s recent work includes the Cambridge Introduction book to Music Technology to be published in October 2011 by Cambridge University Press. He is coeditor of the Cambridge Companion to Electronic Music and co-author of the Chapter on Composing with SuperCollider for The SuperCollider Book published recently by MIT Press. D’Escriván has won several prizes both for his concert and film music. He has been twice winner of the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition, France, in 1987 and 1989. His electroacoustic music has been performed and broadcast internationally. At present, d’Escriván is Reader in Creative Music Technology at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Ben Cottrell is a composer and saxophonist currently based in Manchester. He is best known as the musical director of the Beats & Pieces Big Band, which he founded in 2008 as a vehicle for his own compositions and arrangements. Since then, the band has established a reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting emerging jazz groups, a reputation that is also rapidly spreading into Europe. In March 2011, Beats & Pieces were named as the winners of the European Young Artists’ Jazz Award, one of the continent’s major jazz prizes for emerging musicians, held as part of the Burghausen International Jazz Festival in Germany.

Eleanor Gaynard Ellie Gaynard is a 2nd year music student at The University of Manchester, where she studies violin under Julia Hanson. Ellie is involved with various MUMS ensembles and has a keen interest in new music, having performed with the University’s contemporary music ensemble, Vaganza. Since a young age Ellie has been involved with folk music and regularly plays for sessions, festivals and ceilidhs. Pursued alongside her classical training, this has provided her with an alternative musical perspective which has recently been extended by her study and performance of traditional Eastern European Klezmer. Ellie hopes to pursue further classical performance study after graduating next year.

MANTIS (Manchester Theatre in Sound) presents concerts of music and sound, featuring compositions and performances enhanced by the use of new technology and digital media. MANTIS combines a broad array of sonic events at the MANTIS Festival and MANTIS-in-Motion, which range from the live diffusion of acousmatic works on a 48-loudspeaker sound system (using the unique MANTIS System), to Live Instrumental and Electronics events involving large ensemble groups on stage.

The Lunchtime Concert Series is supported by the Ida Carroll Trust.

S.LOW ist ein interdisziplinäres Projekt, das 34 internationale Künstler aus den Bereichen der Bildenden Kunst, der Komposition mit elektronischen Medien, der Musikologie, der Performance, des Ingenieurwesens, der Physik und des Films in Berlin zusammenbringt. Es zielt darauf ab, in der Zusammenarbeit Synergien zu artikulieren, indem sich die Teilnehmer im Kontext der Hauptstadt Berlin mit dem Konzept von ‘slow’ und ‘low’ auseinandersetzen.

S.LOW will den Austausch von Wissen und Methodiken fördern, indem die Teilnehmer unabhängig der Disziplin gemeinsame Fragestellungen formulieren. Wichtige Punkte sind dabei: der kreative Einsatz von alternativen (slow und low) Technologien gegenüber der neusten, führenden technischen Entwicklung; die Suche nach einem neuen Rhythmus im kreativen Schaffensprozess, besonders bei interdisziplinären oder gemeinschaftlichen Projekten; die Kunstproduktion, die den intellektuellen Rahmen entweder sehr hoch ansetzt oder diesbezüglich keinen bestimmten Anspruch erhebt, und ihre Relevanz für die Teilnehmer, unabhängig ob mit akademischem oder nichtakademischem Hintergrund, und generell die heutige gegenseitige Beeinflussung von Kunst und Umwelt.

S.LOW beinhaltet musikalische Darbietungen, Ausstellungen, Soundinstallationen, Screenings, Workshops und Diskussionsrunden. Aus der Kollaboration der Teilnehmer und ihrer ortsbezogenen Interaktion im Berliner Raum sollen sich langfristig sowohl die Entwicklung neuer Werke, als auch neue Verbindungen unter den Teilnehmern ergeben. Des Weiteren sollen die Ideen, auf denen das Projekt beruht, fortgeführt und umgesetzt werden.

Bisher hat das S.LOW Projekt zwei Veranstaltungsorte in Berlin gewinnen können: '91mQ' im Stadtteil Friedrichshain und 'NK' in Neukölln. Zwei andere Veranstaltungsorte haben prinzipiell ihre Zustimmung zur Teilnahme gegeben, zwei weitere werden zusätzlich angemietet (Einzelheiten sind dem Programm zu entnehmen).

Das Projekt wird größtenteils von Cross-Disciplinary Frog Ltd. koordiniert, einer gemeinnützigen GmbH mit Sitz in Manchester, UK. Cross-Disciplinary Frog Ltd. beruft sich auf zwei Jahrzehnte Erfahrung und den Einsatz auf den Gebieten der Darstellenden Kunst, der kreativen Tonkunst, der Wissenschaft und digitaler Technologie.

Zielsetzungen:

die Möglichkeit für gegenseitige Anstöße durch Ideenaustausch und gemeinsame kooperative Projekte
ein interdisziplinäres, internationales Zusammenkommen von Kreativen zur Entwicklung neuer Schnittstellen der künstlerischen Medien
die Durchführung unterschiedlicher Projekte: 22 neue Werke, 4 Diskussionsrunden, 5 Workshops, 10 praktische Projekte
eine ortsbezogene Einbindung der Stadt Berlin im theoretischen Konzept
das Zusammenbringen von Teilnehmern unterschiedlichster Fachrichtungen mit den Künstlern
die Möglichkeit der Zusammenarbeit für junge Künstler mit Kunstschaffenden mit bereits mehr Erfahrung

Das Prinzip:

Die Teilnehmer des Projekts S.LOW wurden von den Direktoren aufgrund bestimmter, folgend benannter Kriterien ausgewählt: eine intensive und reflexive Werkbetrachtung; ein internationales Tätigkeitsfeld; unterschiedliche Disziplinen und Arbeitsbereiche, die interessante Ergebnisse bei der Zusammenarbeit versprechen. Ein weiteres Kriterium für die Kompatibilität der Teilnehmer ist eine bereits erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit mit den Direktoren bei diversen vorhergehenden Projekten.

From 54 degrees North on the shores of Morecambe Bay to 78 degrees South beneath the surface of the frozen sea off the coast of Ross Island, Antarctica. Chris Watson is one of the world's leading recorders of wildlife and natural phenomena. He traces a sonic connection through the rhythm and music recorded in the largest and most sound rich habitat on our planet.

Chris Watson records for and makes programmes for BBC Radio 4 for the Natural History Unit, based in Bristol, England. He has also recorded for BBC TV, and was one of the main sound recordists used by David Attenborough for his award-winning series of programmes which included The Life of Birds, The Blue Planet, Life In The Undergrowth, The Life of Mammals and Life in Cold Blood. Chris Watson has recently contributed sound recordings to the new BBC TV series by David Attenborough, The Frozen Planet.

Chris won a BAFTA for Best Factual Recording for The Life of Birds in 1998.

Last Sunday, 11 Sept — the tenth anniversary of the events of 9/11 — the premieres of two new orchestra tone poems about 9/11 by Kevin Malone (Music, University of Manchester) took place at the Imperial War Museum North at Salford Quays. The programme lasted until 5:00pm, and admission was free.

Performers for “E pluribus unum”: Nottingham Philharmonic with Mark Heron conducting, Christian Elliot cello soloist and Manuella Blackburn computer programmer/playback musician.

Performers for “Angels and Fireflies”: musicians from the Winston-Salem Symphony Orchestra with conductor Woodson Faulkner, flute soloist Tadeu Coelho and Angela Yarber dancer.

The British flag recovered from the collapse of the World Trade Center towers was on display alongside the performers. Broadcasted by BBC Radio Manchester on Sunday morning at 10:30am with a live interview with Gordon Burns, part of which will include excerpts from these pieces of research.

David Eagle composes chamber, orchestral and electroacoustic music, and in recent years, has explored computer applications in composition, improvisation, multimedia and sound spatialization. His latest kinetic music compositions use the movement of sound to fundamentally transform the listening experience. A Professor at the University of Calgary, he teaches composition and electroacoustic music and is director of the Sonic Arts Lab and coordinator of the Happening New Music Festival. Previously, he studied music at McGill University, at the Institut für Neue Musik, Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Freiburg, Germany, and at the University of California, Berkeley (PhD 1992). El enfoque principal se lleva a cabo sobre la creación de audio para juegos y su integración con animación en 3D. Muestra de proyectos basados en interacción de ambientes sonoros y animación 3D en tiempo real usando Blender, MaxMSP, Spotlight Tecnology, Python/OSC, metadatos e interfase construidas para proyectos específicos como ´Ho - una expedición sonora a Vietnam´ y otros proyectos relacionados con plataformas de juegos creados en NOVARS. The Sonic Arts Forum is holding a meeting as part of the week of speakers event at Huddersfield University on the 7th of July between 10am and 5pm. This is an open event where composers, using technology to produce music can introduce their work in a friendly, informal and supportive environment. All are welcome to attend either to introduce their work or participate in discussions. Previous events have covered everything from sonic weapons to music for fruit machines, with algorithmic composition, live electronics and acousmatic inbetween.

The confirmed introducers are Mark Pilkington (NOVARS Research Centre), James O'Shea, Alex O'Shea, Peter DeMoncey Conegliano, Jon Aveyard, Frederico Macedo, Chrissie Caulfield, Dale Perkins and Daz Disley and covers works range from noise music, electric violin, live instruments with processing, video, live electronics, works for fixed medium and instrument and more between them.

Start time: 10 am with coffee and tea with the first person introducing their work at 10.20 am. The event is due to finish at 5pm with a free improv session following in the evening.

Composers Darren Copeland and Ben Thigpen start Residence at NOVARS, June 2011

Darren Copeland and Ben Thigpen have been working together on developing a controller based spatialisation system for live performance since 2006. Manchester University music students and other researchers (*) are welcome to join them in the main studio at NOVARS from 12 to 4 on Thursday June 23 for a demonstration at 1 pm. Darren Copeland is a Canadian sound artist who is the artistic director of New Adventures in Sound Art in Toronto. Benjamin Thigpen is an American sound artist active throughout Europe.

Darren Copeland's entry into music and sound was unusual. In the 1980’s as a teenager he discovered analog synthesizers almost by accident. And with no previous formal musical training or even interest in music, he started studying analog synthesizers and early digital samplers through private studies with Pier Rubesa in Toronto. This lead to the creation of his own compositions and collaborations with musician Ed Troscianczyk and poet/visual artist John Marriott and others in the experimental music scene in Toronto. With these artists, Darren self-published a number of cassette compilations of the work produced at this time, including Living it Out — in the Dear Air — Space, The Three Faces, Mahwje’s Outlook, An Introduction in Frost, and Dreams of Darkness.

After high school Darren studied theater sound design at Niagara College and parallel to this began making pieces using only environmental sounds. He then moved to Vancouver from 1989 to ’95 to study electroacoustic composition at Simon Fraser University and was introduced to the research of the World Soundscape Project through his studies with Barry Truax which intensified his focus on soundscape composition. The compositions Faith-Annihia and Always Becoming Somebody Else included on the disc Perdu et retrouvé and the works included on his previous empreintes DIGITALes release Rendu visible are an outcome of this intensive investigation of soundscape recordings and electroacoustic composition.

His interest in soundscape recordings was motivated by wanting to understand better the associations that different listeners had to various environmental sounds. Reactions to pieces like Always Becoming Somebody Else and others from that period often brought very personal and contradictory reactions from listeners. Darren at the time concluded that this might have something to do with the visual bias of western society and the lack of a common vocabulary for talking about sound in everyday experience.

He felt that there were two solutions that would help him to better understand the visual bias of the listener: one was to investigate the nature of listening and perception more; the other solution was to combine sounds with texts and stories in order to present sounds inside a specific social or psychological context that provided more of a focus to the wide array of associations latent in the listening imagination. And so, in the mid-nineties, he branched out into other forms and made pieces that moved into the realm of theater, radio documentary, radio drama, and sound-text composition. He created an adaptation of August Strindberg’s (1849-1912) play A Dream Play (1901), which became the first radio drama at CBC conceived for broadcast in Surround 5.1.

In 1996-97, Darren undertook his postgraduate studies at University of Birmingham (UK) and completed his soundscape documentary Life Unseen in which he investigated how blind people listen and function in a visual-centered society. Following this intensive study at Birmingham, he composed The Toronto Sound Mosaic, the soundtrack for Samuel Beckett’s (1906-89) play That Time (1975) (produced by Threshold Theater), and his text-sound composition Lapse in Perception (produced for CBC Radio program Out Front). Through the late-nineties to 2002, Darren collaborated heavily in the theater and dance community in Toronto making soundtracks that integrated sound in a compelling fashion and this process also brought insight into the associative qualities of environmental sounds. Between 2005 and the present he has been developing with Mark Cassidy and Sebastian Schäfer a theatrical adaptation of Birger Sellin's writings on autism, ich will kein inmich mehr sein.

In 2002 his compositions returned to abstraction again, using more sounds that are not environmental or recognizable. Works such as They’re Trying to Save Themselves, Streams of Whispers and The Wrong Mistakes represent this interest, but have a similar dynamic flow and textural sense to the earlier works that use environmental sounds. Other works like On Schedule and On a Strange Road use environmental sounds in a more conceptual way and are less conscious of rendering the acoustic environment in a faithful or believable fashion. Since 2006 he has been creating sound installations, including Playing on the 401 and Breath Control, which negotiate the balance between abstraction and the associative qualities of environmental sounds. Other works have included a series of collaborative works for radio and public art installations with Vancouver interdisciplinary artist Andreas Kahre.

As well as being a sound artist and composer, Darren Copeland is also the Artistic Director of New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA), which produces electroacoustic and experimental sound art events in Toronto (Canada). With NAISA he has also toured Europe and Canada performing in concerts, facilitating workshops, and giving lectures with a focus on octophonic spatialization. Darren is an Associate Member of The Canadian Music Centre. He also currently serves on the board of directors for the Canadian Association for Sound Ecology (CASE), and previously for the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC), Vancouver Pro Musica, and Rumble Productions.

Benjamin Thigpen, nomad, born in the United States, with degrees in English Literature, Comparative Literature and “Esthetics, Technologies and Artistic Creations,” immigrated to Paris at the age of 31. Since then, he has composed at GRM (Paris), at Musiques et Recherches (Belgium), at SCRIME (Bordeaux), at EMS (Stockholm), at the Visby International Centre for Composers (Sweden), at STEIM (Amsterdam), at Djerassi (California), at l'Espace Totem (Montreal), in his bedroom and in the train. After 6 years teaching computer music at Ircam (Paris), followed by a brief period at the University of Washington (Seattle), he currently teaches at the Conservatory of Cuneo (Italy) and at the the Royal Conservatory of Mons (Belgium). As a free-lance musician and programmer, he collaborates with the State University of New York (USA), with New Adventures in Sound Art (Toronto), with La Kitchen.com (Paris), with Noise Watchers Unlimited (Luxembourg), with CIRM (Nice), with the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (Milan) and with Ircam (Paris).

His music is concerned with issues of energy, density, complexity, movement, simultaneity and violence, and he often works extensively with space as a primary compositional parameter. He thinks that music does not exist in time but rather creates it, and considers that music is not the art of sound but the art of the transcendence of sound.

Pond Life III — Patrick Sanan & Sam Salem
A collaboration between Californian mathematician Patrick Sanan and Manchester-based composer and artist Sam Salem, Pond Life presents viewers with a tactile interactive experience. Using programming that mimics evolutionary systems, the luminous interface projected onto a tank of water allows visitors to interact with an ecosystem whose behaviour reveals perhaps the paths of humanity’s earliest migrations and the first foundations of settlements as the digital organisms gather around precious natural resources, represented by different coloured light. Hô: a Sonic Expedition to Vietnam — Ricardo Climent
Hô presents the gallery visitor with the opportunity to navigate their way through an imaginary sonic expedition to Vietnam. Using a large steering wheel reminiscent of that of an old sailing ship, the viewer moves their way through a series of audiovisual puzzles uncovering in the process the unique soundworld and culture of Vietnam.
Hô employs open-source software techniques to offer the gallery visitor a computer-game-like experience in which the usual visual parameters are relegated in importance in favour of a focus on acoustic exploration.
A Scrapbook of Metro Sounds — Kaho Cheung
Whether known as le métro or the underground, the subway or rapid transit, the sound of trains rattling through tunnels is a key feature of the soundscapes of many of the world’s biggest cities. From 2007 to 2010, artist and composer Kaho Cheung travelled around the world collecting recordings of these transport systems. The installation A Scrapbook of Metro Sounds allows the gallery visitor to make virtual acoustic journeys between Helsinki, Tokyo, Bangkok, London, Berlin, Stockholm, Hong Kong, New York, Athens, Barcelona, San Francisco and Valencia, revealing in the process a globalised network of similar sounds, but also the subtle cultural variations in the deployment of this most everyday of technologies.

Crytek GmbH has provided University of Manchester in UK with educational site licenses for the game engine software CryEngine 3 (CryENGINE® technology) to undertake research in Audio for game engine environments at the NOVARS Research Centre.

The network licenses will provide the studios with access to CryEngine 3 for PhD research and for a new undergraduate music course entitled: Sound for Digital Entertainment Environments

Synopsis: S.LOW - vip lounges are for ALL is a non-linear non-directed documentary film as a result of the S.LOW Projekt (Berlin). In the summer of 2010, about forty international and national visual artists, music composers working with electronic media, musicologists, performers, engineers, physical scientists and film-makers met in Berlin to discuss the concepts of low and slow in the context of the city. The film explores how art can survive outside the comfort of large institutional support and if as a result, artists can change the rules of engagement with audiences by giving the latter equal importance in the process of sharing and making arts. With an emphasis on people and by documenting 'the things in between' during such project, this audiovisual work allows listeners to navigate through a number of values and concepts such as, trust, believes, authorship, excellence, art-killing rules, dream-cities, time-to-share or being-faithful, as seen by the artists.

PhD Composer Sam Salem: Part-time Lecturer, Bath Spa University 2011, to expand NOVARS's list...

Since the start of the year, Composer Sam Salem, a current PhD student at University of Manchester has been teaching every Thursday at Bath Spa University. Although he travels many miles every week from Manchester to Bath Spa, he is still involved very much with NOVARS Research activities and serving as teaching assistant for the electroacoustic courses in Music at Manchester University.

Sam's teaching story adds up to the number of existing PhDs and graduates from NOVARS, engaged with education and research in other institutions in the last couple of years or so; e.g. Tom Scott, Mauricio Pauly and Rodrigo Constanzo at the RNCM, Diana Salazar at Kingston University London, Manuella Blackburn at Liverpool Hope University, Kaho Cheung at the Baptist University of Hong Kong and Richard Scott (visiting @ Lancaster University). Some master students have been accepted to international courses like Chris Swithinbank (IRCAM) or continued PhD Studies (Patrick Sanan in Pure Maths in California or Panos Amelides awarded to study PhD with Prof John Young at De Montfort University), got jobs in Schools (Heather Bamforth) or stablished themselves are freelance composers and performers (George Denis in London, Gavin Osborn in the North West of England, Irma Catalina with 'Miseria y Hambre' or Mark Pilkington, an active performer in the region and teacher at Futureworks, school of media) or people who already had University jobs in composition like Nick Casswell (at UCLAN) came to join our PhD community of composers and sound reearchers.

Rodrigo Constanzo starts residency at STEIM today (14th-23rd March 2011)

Rodrigo Constanzo is a Spanish-American performer and composer living in Manchester, England. He is an avid improviser and performs regularly using home made electro-acoustic, and modified electronic instruments. He has performed at the FUTURESONIC and Manchester Jazz Festivals in Manchester, the SOUND Festival in Aberdeen, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. He has released several CDs including an improv duo CD with Pierre Alexandre Tremblay, and most recently, I AM YOUR DENSITY, a large ensemble improv composition which includes the graphic score with it. He is currently working towards an MA in Electroacoustic Composition at the University of Manchester and involved in several projects including Takahashi’s Shellfish Concern, an improv based performance-art group. He also co-runs The Noise Upstairs, an improv collective and label which puts on monthly nights and quarterly workshops in Manchester and Sheffield. Rodrigo Constanzo was born in Madrid, Spain in 1976. He then spent the next three decades living in Miami, Florida, before moving to Manchester, England where he resides today. He has performed as a solo musician or as part of various groups for the majority of his life, including at the FUTURESONIC and Manchester Jazz Festivals in Manchester, the SOUND Festival in Aberdeen, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. He began his studies in music at the age of four, studying piano with his grandmother, formerly a piano teacher at the Conservatory of Cuba. In high school he formed, and directed, the South Miami Senior High School Rock Band, which performed regularly at school functions. He graduated in 1994 and went on to study at Miami Dade College under Jane Pyle, Jo Foster, and Linda Fowler. While there, Rodrigo won, and placed in, several composition competitions, met future collaborators, and eventually earned an Associate of Arts degree in Music.

In 2004, Rodrigo formed Failure, Arc of Beauty with Gilbert Kong. The group would eventually grow to include his future wife, Angela Guyton, whose participation allowed for the exploration of the ways sight and sound could interact on a performance level. This is something Rodrigo always had an interest in and worked hand in hand with his passion for improvisation. It was improvisation which would lead to the formation of MUS2301, an improvisation-based group/class that continued in Miami until Rodrigo and Angela moved to Manchester, England in 2007. Although he is classically trained, his primary interest lies in experimental music and improvisation. For the past ten years he has built and performed using instruments he has built himself, ranging from modified electronic toys, to a electro-acoustic stringed instruments. He is as eclectic a composer as he is a performer, believing that each composition is self-standing, with each idea being a unique one, and demanding a unique outcome. The one thing that ties most of his work together is the surrendering of part of his control as a composer, be it in aleatoric or arbitrary decisions at the composition level, or through largely improvised forms at the performance level. This can manifest itself as a graphic score for large ensemble, an intricate string quartet, or a simple folk song.

Quatuor Danel did workshop Andrew Garbett's new piece for String Quartet and Electronics

10th of March 2011: Danel String Quartet workshop newly created string quartets composed by PhDs at University of Manchester, UK. The workshop started with Andrew's piece which included electronics composed after transforming materials as a result of Danel's aural responses to Andrews other works recorded in Studio 3 at the start of the year.

(From his bio): Andrew Garbett is a highly versatile composer whose experience ranges from composing solo, chamber, choral, orchestral and electroacoustic music for the concert hall, to writing music for dance, film, and youth ensembles. Andrew studied with Adam Gorb, Paul Patterson and Anthony Gilbert at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester, UK). He is currently studying PhD at the NOVARS research centre under the supervision of Dr Ricardo Climent and Dr David Berezan

Research Interests: His music ranges from highly experimental avant-garde works through to very accessible music in a wide range of genres.

Manchester Sonic Meta-ontology encapsulates a number or newly created compositions, sonic events and ambisonics field recording trips across the City of Manchester and the North West of England. The project is showcased in two parts (5th-6th March 2011 and 10th-12th June 2011) in the form of concert events and experimental laboratories at Manchester University, Islinton Mill and the City of Manchester. 'Manchester's Sonic Meta-ontology' explores whether there is really such thing as a 'Manchester sound' and if so, what is it, can we experience it, and can we understand it? Substantive empirical investigation takes place in partnership will local agents and artists in the region, which are looking into the creation, identity, and survival of the real truth of Manchester's Sound.

Bio: Ricardo Climent works in areas of music composition and interactive media, involving the use of audio and visual metadata. The piece shares a symbiotic connection to the auditory and visual senses prescribe in the composition, a sort of a metaphysical convergence, an interplay between the two perceptual organisms of the eye and the ear. The sound world of the piece represents a dualistic approach between naturalistic and synthetic sound and visual materials. Roller coaster ride through a landscape of sound and light energy patterns; revealing unfamiliar and familiar places. A dialogue between action and re-action a consequence of events through time. Impossible physical scenarios arise from a maelstrom of evocations placed between desire and experience, the interpenetrations and displacements which occur between various stimuli. Hopefully, the piece has the ability to generate overwhelming emotional impact exclusively from cinematic and electroacoustic methodologies, not thematic content. Sound material comprises of field recordings from rock quarries, farm machinery, birds, metallic impacts and synthesised sounds.isual material comprises of computer generated graphics, original oil paintings and found film footage.

Mark Pilkington is a performer, composer and lecturer in electronic and electroacoustic music. PhD. candidate at the University Of Manchester UK - NOVARS. MA in electroacoustic composition, the University of Huddersfield in the UK 2004. He is interested in fusing together digital audio/visual structures that can be manipulated from a score or improvised in real-time thus presenting performances that question traditional concepts of art, music and technology. Lee Fraser

Lee Fraser (UK, 1981) is an electroacoustic composer with a strong interest in the acousmatic practice. He studied composition with Frank Denyer and David Prior at Dartington College of Arts, before taking a degree in sonic arts at Middlesex University, and in 2009 completed an MA in electroacoustic composition with Denis Smalley at City University, London, for which he was awarded a distinction.

Lee is currently pursuing a PhD in electroacoustic composition under the supervision of David Berezan at the University of Manchester. His research, funded by the AHRC, is concerned with the aesthetics of acousmatic music. In recent years, he has been involved in a number of collaborative and performance-based projects, including the reworking of material for sound artist and composer Mikhail Karikis, released on the Sub Rosa imprint in 2009.

His music has been presented in concert and broadcast throughout Europe and America.

Habitat

is a design for an interactive, temporary performance installation that invites audiences to enter multiple layers of virtual and real space. Spectators experience how these spaces come to life from any perspective of their choice.

The Studio LaborGras and the performances of „Habitat“ at RADIALSYSTEM V are subsidised by „der Senatskanzlei – Kulturelle Angelegenheiten.“

The work in progress 2008 version was created in cooperation with Espaço dos Tempos Convento da Saudação, Montemor-o-Novo, with Faculdade De Belas Artes Do Porto and was supported by Kirchhoff Automotive.

Wood-carved sculptures provide the general framework for the performance-installation space. Each individual sculpture also contains an intimate inner space that the viewer must discover.

These interior spaces are equipped with a screen and speaker. The screen reveals a virtual space that is a media-generated extension of the sculpture, building a virtual stage for the dancer and her choreography.

The dancer performs in a clearly defined area, which is integrated into the general performance-installation framework. Dance and sculpture are united through the use of new technology and a software programme developed especially for this performance.

The real-time video projections establish a link between the choreography in real space and the dance taking place in the sculpture's virtual spaces. The virtual stages (screens) come alive as the dance unfolds.

The dancer inhabits the sculpture's virtual spaces as a single image or as multiple clones of herself. Every movement is born of an exchange with, and in relation to, the sculpture's virtual inner spaces.

As she performs, the dancer is aware of the "habitats" defined by her interaction with the sculpture's inner rooms. The choreographic interpretation remains part of the sculpture as a digital recording.

The dancer inhabits separate "Habitats" of the sculptural installation without physically leaving the dance area.

For the spectators, the environment is both performance and installation, challenging and encouraging them to leave the safety of simple observation and discover new ways to perceive the world around them.

This accessible, walkable installation becomes the audience's temporary living space; a space that comes alive because the audience's own movement brings them to simultaneously discover the real and the media-generated life within the sculptures.

There is no distance between stage, spectator, performer, sound and sculpture, so that the artistic process becomes transparent as the performance progresses.

The LaborGras collective, founded by dancers Renate Graziadei and Arthur Stäldi in Hamburg in 1994, has been in Berlin since 2000.

To mark the occasion, LaborGras will celebrate its 10th "Berliner" anniversary on December 28 & 29 in the company of friends, collaborators and the public.

For two days, friends from the art and performance scene in Germany and abroad will present excerpts from their work: the stage will be open to performances, videos and improvisations.

OpenSimulator is an open source multi-platform, multi-user 3D application server. It can be used to create a virtual environment (or world) which can be accessed through a variety of clients, on multiple protocols. OpenSimulator allows virtual world developers to customize their worlds using the technologies they feel work best - we've designed the framework to be easily extensible. OpenSimulator is written in C#, running both on Windows over the .NET framework and on *ix machines over the Mono framework. The source code is released under a BSD License, a commercially friendly license to embed OpenSimulator in products.

Out of the box, OpenSimulator can be used to simulate virtual environments similar to Second Life™, given that it supports the core of SL's messaging protocol. As such, these virtual worlds can be accessed with the regular SL viewers. However, OpenSimulator is neither a clone of Second Life's server nor does it aim at becoming such a clone. On the contrary, OpenSimulator lacks support for many of the game-specific features of Second Life (on purpose), while pursuing innovative directions towards becoming the bare bones, but extensible, server of the 3D Web.

Jose Ignacio Pecino

Ignacio Pecino initially studied physics from 1994 at the University of Seville (Spain) and graduated as a Sound Technician (Fundación Audiovisual de Andalucía) in 2001. Both fields finally led into a BMus(Hons) Degree in Music Composition at "Conservatorio Superior de Malaga" where he has worked as a sound engineer and a lecturer. In 2007, he attended master classes with members of the INA-GRM in Paris - Daniel Teruggi, Parmegiani Bernard and Francois Bayle, and the PhD in Communication and Semiotics Edson Zampronha.

His research interests range from acousmatic and spatialisation to semiotics and cybernetics, having published several articles in specialised journals (Filomúsica, January 2007).

He has been commissioned orchestral works by Malaga Symphony Orchestra (Granada / 2 ", January 2010) and premiered fixed media and live electronics works at MAEM'07 (Madrid), "Festival Zeppelin 2010" (Barcelona) or "Primavera en la Habana 2010" (Cuba)

Ignacio Pecino is currently studying for a MusM in Electroacoustic Composition at NOVARS (University of Manchester) where he was granted the prestigious Harry Clough award.

Donal Sarsfield was born in Co. Mayo. He studied composition with Piers Hellawell at Queen's University, Belfast and with Philip Grange and David Berezan at the University of Manchester. Being from the west of Ireland his music sits uncomfortably between European and American ideals, and though he has no driving aesthetic, he has a strong interest in vocal and choral music. He returned to the University of Manchester in September 2009 to start a PhD in Electroacoustic Composition, under supervision from David Berezan, courtesy of the Irish Arts Council Elizabeth Maconchy Composition Fellowship.

Aesthetics and Analysis Master Class in Manchester University's Access Grid

Postgraduate students and staff at the NOVARS Research Centre, University of Manchester were linked virtually with colleagues and students in Sheffield and Leicester Universities via Manchester's Access Grid.

The Access Grid may be thought of as a prototype for "next generation video conferencing". The aim of the inventors of Access Grid (at the Futures Lab, Argonne National Laboratory) was to implement a technology that could support productive meetings between remote participants that are as effective as face-to-face meetings - all using commodity hardware. This can only happen if one is able to forget the technology and concentrate on the meeting itself.

Features of the Access Grid are:

Very high quality audio
Big display to enable full-size people shots and simultaneous viewing of all remote sites
Multiple cameras to show groups and multiple viewpoints
Collaborative software to enable remote participants to share and interact with data
Usage of IP multicast, to enable bandwidth-efficient networking

Suk-Jun Kim’s music mainly focuses on the sense of places that are fantastic, imaginary, magical, and realistic, in which listeners can visit, stop by, and dwell. Having won several international composition awards and attracted commissions, Kim’s music has been performed worldwide and can be heard on ICMC, IMEB, and SEAMUS labels, and M&R. His research focuses on acousmatic reasoning, imaginal listening, phenomenological approaches to the aesthetics of electroacoustic music, space and place, platial memory and sound, and magical realism in electroacoustic music among others. Kim’s interest in platial memory and sound has also led him to expand his medium to installations. He recently had his first solo exhibition in Berlin, Germany.

Suk-Jun Kim studied theology at Yonsei university, South Korea and Recording Engineering at OIART (Ontario Institute of Audio and Recording Technology). He earned a master’s degree in Music Technology in Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in composition at the University of Florida. In 2009, Kim was invited to Berlin by DAAD for its Artists-in-Berlin programme, and now is a Leverhulme visiting fellow at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He shares his life with Sungeun Kim, his wife, and Mei and Ami, two most beloved cats.

Pond Life III: Following on from our success with Pond Life II, we plan to create a new version of the work, developing the themes and technologies of the piece further. Pond Life is a generative audiovisual laboratory that encourages audience exploration and participation. Pond Life II has been exhibited in Montreal (ICMC 2010), in New York (NYCEMF2) and in S.LOW Projekt Berlin 2010, (thanks to Antonia Schwarz)

Creating Ho has been a full-of-fun journey and a very stimulating project. Ho is an imaginary sonic expedition to Vietnam, plenty of adventures and drama. Although it is immersed in a three-dimensional visual environment, it has a focus on sound. In Ho, the performer, sound artist or casual visitor, becomes ‘the captain of a ship,’ who controls a sound-wheel interface inspired by maritime navigation. While 'navigating', he/she leads listeners to an aural journey with critical stops at specific locations. Such scenes are my personal imaginary reconstruction of a number of sketchy stories with unique sound interest and located in Vietnam. Audiovisual scenarios vary from a rickshaw trip finding your way out of a sonic-maze, to experiencing a zebra crossing in a jungle of cars and mopeds, or even having an argument in a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, because you dislike eating live giant squids...
This Research Diary provides a contextualisation for the concept of navigation through sound and identifies new research and creative questions arising, which may be solved with creative practice. Hồ - A Sonic Expedition to Viet nam 2009 (Ricardo Climent)

The Navigation System Through Sound is a new sonic-GPS orientation tool created to assist dynamic compositional musical methods on a live performance. It aims to help general audiences to understand and enjoy more the language of electroacoustic music and to provide them with an enhanced surround sonic experience, inspired by that achieved on the visual sensory system in planetariums and three-dimensional cinemas. It also aims to increase the awareness, for example, on areas of sound pollution, with potential for expansion beyond typical territories of acoustic ecology. The performer/composer, as ‘the captain of the ship,’ controls the interface of a 'sound- wheel’ inspired by maritime navigation, leading audiences to an aural journey with critical stops at specific locations with unique sonic interest. Ho is a full-of-fun, but also drama, sonic-cartographic expedition to Vietnam combining composed sounds with game engine technologies and the use of audiometadata. Chris Swithinbank selected for 'Adopt a Composer scheme'

Former NOVARS student Chris Swithinbank has been selected to take part in 2010-11 'Adopt a Composer' scheme, funded by the PRS for Music Foundation and run by Sound and Music, in association with Making Music. The scheme pairs up composers with amateur ensembles to collaborate on new music and Chris will be working with the orchestra of King Edward Musical Society in Macclesfield.

In the coming months Chris will be getting to know the orchestra and writing a new piece to be performed at Macclesfield Parish Church on Saturday 18 June 2011 as part of the Macclesfield Barnaby Festival and the celebration of the 750th anniversary of the town's royal charter.

Rodrigo Constanzo and Maurico Pauly - Live improvisation.

Rodrigo Constanzo is a Spanish-American performer and composer living in Manchester, England. He is an avid improviser and performs regularly using home made electro-acoustic, and modified electronic instruments. He has performed at the FUTURESONIC and Manchester Jazz Festivals in Manchester, the SOUND Festival in Aberdeen, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. He has released several CDs including an improv duo CD with Pierre Alexandre Tremblay, and most recently, I AM YOUR DENSITY, a large ensemble improv composition which includes the graphic score with it. He is currently involved in several projects including Takahashi’s Shellfish Concern, an improv based performance-art group, and Deaf To Van Gogh’s Ear, a minimalist math/pop band. He also co-runs The Noise Upstairs, an improv collective and label which puts on monthly nights and quarterly workshops in Manchester.

Mauricio Pauly was born in San José, Costa Rica. His music has been performed in England, Germany, France, Hungary, Russia, Paraguay, Spain and the United States by ensembles including the JACK Quartet, the Ikarus Chamber Players, Tres Americas Ensemble, New York Miniaturist Ensemble, Juilliard Pierrot Ensemble, Iturriaga Quartet and Psappha Ensemble. Pauly is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Manchester. He has previously studied in San José, Miami, Boston and The Hague with Fredrick Kaufman, Lukas Foss and Richard Cornell and has attended lessons with Marco Stroppa, Michael Jarrell, Jonathan Harvey, Hugues Dufourt, and Andrea Szigetvari. Mauricio was awarded the Staubach Honoraria for a new work which was premiered in Darmstadt, 2010. Past awards include the Esther Kahn Career Entry award 2004, the Pablo Sorozabal Composition Competion 2005 and the Budapest Clavicembalo Foundation Composition Prize 2005. Mauricio is a founding member of the Altavoz composers with whom he has recently released a compliation CD. He lives in Manchester, UK and teaches at the Royal Northern College of Music.

As a performer Mauricio mostly plays electric bass but often includes the use of other instruments, amplified objects, sampling and live computer processing.

Mark Pilkington is a performer and composer of electronic and electroacoustic music. Interested in fusing together audio/visual structures that can be manipulated from a score or improvised in real-time thus presenting performances that question traditional concepts of art, music and technology. Synopsis: S.LOW - vip lounges are for ALL is a non-linear non-directed film as the result of the S.LOW Projekt (Berlin). In the summer of 2010, about forty international and national visual artists, music composers working with electronic media, musicologists, performers, engineers, physical scientists and film-makers met in Berlin to discuss the concepts of low and slow in the context of the city.

The film explores how art can survive outside the comfort of large institutional support and if as a result, artists can change the rules of engagement with audiences by giving the latter equal importance in the process of sharing and making arts. With an emphasis on people and by documenting 'the things in between' while the S.LOW projekt lasted, this audiovisual work allows listeners to navigate through a number of values and concepts such as, trust, believes, authorship, excellence, art-killing rules, dream-cities, time-to-share or being-faithful, as seen by the artists.

Background
Originally from Canada, joined the Department of Music in 2004 as a lecturer. His departmental responsibilities include acting as Postgraduate admissions tutor for Composition, and serving as a coordinator for COMPASS, the department’s Centre for Composition and Associated Studies. Irish violinist Darragh Morgan enjoys a hugely diverse and rewarding career. His special interest in contemporary music has led to many collaborations with today’s greatest composers and appearances with leading ensembles. Highlights include the world premieres of Sir John Tavener's Hymn of Dawn with the Ulster Orchestra and Andrew Poppy's Darwin's Sin Draw with the Crash Ensemble, and performing Arvo Pärt’s Tabula Rasa in the closing concert of the RTE Living Music Festival. He received many invitations to lead world-class international groups such as Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, Musik Fabrik, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Remix Ensemble working with conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Oliver Knussen and Heinz Holliger.

Darragh has performed at international festivals including Warsaw Autumn, Wien Modern, Maerz Musik Berlin, Lucern Festival, BBC Proms Chamber Music, Aldeburgh, Spitalfields and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. As a member of the Fidelio Trio and Smith Quartet, he has appeared in prestigious venues worldwide such as the Wigmore Hall, Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, Seoul Arts Centre and Casa da Musica Porto.

Darragh has recorded over 25 CDs including Michael Nyman's complete piano trios with the Fidelio Trio and an acclaimed recording of Philip Glass' complete string quartets with the Smith Quartet.

Darragh is professor of violin and chamber music at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and teaches regularly at the Royal College of Music, Britten-Pears Young Artists Programme, Pro Corda and Apple Hill Centre for Chamber Music. He has given masterclasses in the United Kingdom and abroad. Furthermore, he has been Artistic Director of CoMA's Open Score project, Music @ Drumcliffe in Ireland, and throughout the 2004 season was Artistic Director of Baroque 2000 in South Africa.

Darragh studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London. He received chamber music coaching from the Amadeus and Takacs String Quartets, and participated in masterclasses with Sidney Griller, Yehudi Menuhin, Paul Zukofsky, Pinchas Zukerman, Yfrah Neaman and Pierre Amoyal. He plays a fine Italian violin from Bologna (1820) and an Irish violin made by Thomas Perry in 1795.

David Berezan has been invited as the main composer for the Electronic Music Night of the DCMF (Daegu International Contemporary Music Festival), one of the most active and renowned festivals in South Korea , in June 2010. This follows on from the recent performance of three of his works

Mark Pilkington is a performer and composer of electronic and electroacoustic music. Interested in fusing together audio/visual structures that can be manipulated from a score or improvised in real-time thus presenting performances that question traditional concepts of art, music and technology.
He works in the areas of screened works, recordings, installation and live performance. Currently a PhD candidate at the University of Manchester.

Richard Scott (UK) - will been playing with analogue synthesizers. Richard lives in Berlin and Manchester. He is currently an Artistic Resident at STEIM, Amsterdam focussing on infra-red and movement based performance technologies.

Tonight he will be forsaking the computer and his infra red controllers for some down to earth knob wiggling."

Andrew Garbett (UK) - Electronic Study (Fixed Media – Stereo – 4’37”)

The piece is in 3 sections with short ‘transitional’ moments between them which segue one to another forming a continuous whole lasting 4 minutes 37 seconds. The first section is concerned with multiple layers of sound all moving at different speeds around the space, while the second and third sections are more static. The second section is primarily concerned with the placement of individual events in space. In the final section many of the sounds have been fragmented, so they take on quite different characteristics. All the sounds were recorded using everyday objects and then manipulated using the computer programme ‘ProTools’.

Andrew is currently at the end of his first year at the University of Manchester, where he is engaged in research for a PhD in Electroacoustic Music.

Imaginary Sound Worlds - Some thoughts on recent acoustic and acousmatic compositional processes and their potential use in a forthcoming music theatre work

Casswell, Nicholas (b. July 25, 1974, Cheltenham). British composer of mostly chamber works that have been performed successfully throughout Europe.
Nicholas Casswell studied at Dartington College of Arts from 1993-96 (BA with Honours), the University of York from 1998-99 (MA), and completed his PhD in Music Composition at the University of Leeds in 2003 (external examiner Christopher Fox, 2004). His studies at the University of Leeds were enabled by an Audrey Pass Charitable Trust Scholarship and an AHRB Scholarship. In 2000 he was on research leave at Seoul National University in South Korea, enabled by a Samsung/Royal British Legion/BKVA Scholarship.
He has been commissioned and performed by a number of leading international ensembles, such as De Ereprijs, the Luxembourg Sinfonietta and the Nieuw Ensemble, and he has been broadcast across Europe and in Hong Kong. He has received a number of awards and prizes for his compositional output, receiving 1st Prize in the Leeds Philosophical Society’s Millennium Composing Competition, selected 'most promising composer' with The Transformation and Other Stories at the 7th International Young Composers Meeting, Holland (hosted by Louis Andriessen), and awarded 2nd prize for his percussion quartet Temporal Trajectories at the 2nd International Jurgenson Competition, Russia. With Triplicity for the Luxembourg Sinfonietta he won both 1st Prize for the 2007 International Composition Prize Luxemburg and was selected most outstanding composer under 35 at the 2007 ISCM World Music Days in Hong Kong, resulting in the ISCM-IAMIC Young Composer Award. His commission from ISCM and IAMIC for the Nieuw Ensemble was performed at the 2009 International Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam, and subsequently broadcast on Radio 4 Nederland. Triplicity is issued on CD on the Luxembourg LGNM label.
Composition. His interests also lie in the study of Korean Folk music and the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze, and in 2004 he received an ARHB Fellowship to research the Korean genre sanjo, resulting in a co-authored book, Korean Kayagum Sanjo: A Traditional Instrumental Genre published by Ashgate (ISBN: 978-0-7546-6362-1). Here, he integrated a Deleuzian philosophical approach to sanjo, which was reviewed as 'highly commendable' by Cambridge University Press.
